Write a letter to your 100-year-old self.

Dear Joey,

Congratulations on reaching 100. I know you never thought you would reach this age. You have been through so many hard times and challenges. But there have also been good times and good memories. Remember those moments and celebrate.

Where would you go on a shopping spree?

-Honestly, Amazon or Barnes & Noble. I love a book.

What is the last thing you learned?

That allergy season with all the pollen and stuff starts much earlier down south than it does in Maine.

What is one question you hate to be asked? Explain.

Why don’t you just eat less and exercise more? Why don’t you just lose weight? I absolutely hate those questions. Believe me, anyone with a weight problem knows that they have a weight problem.

How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?

-The late Dominick Dunne once said something to the effect that Hollywood will forgive your affairs, your lies, and maybe even your murders, but not your failures.

I went through a hard period where I lost everything and had to start over. I’m not going to say that what other people said about me didn’t bother me. It bothered me greatly. What I found out was that worrying about what others say and think doesn’t pay my bills or bring me money or happiness. It also drives me to prove them wrong.

You’re writing your autobiography. What’s your opening sentence?

My mother thinks I sleep with hookers. Let me explain…

What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

My middle name is Carroll. It is my dad’s first name. He was named that after his grandmother’s maiden name. He was the last of 7 children. They were running out of names at that point.

What are three objects you couldn’t live without?

1. Coffee

2. Books

3. A place to enjoy the first two.
